How is angle steel made?

Hey there! I’m a supplier of angle steel, and I often get asked about how this versatile material is made. So, I thought I’d take a few minutes to walk you through the process. Angle Steel

Starting with the Raw Materials

First things first, we need the right raw materials. Most of the time, we use carbon steel. Carbon steel is a popular choice because it’s strong, durable, and relatively inexpensive. It contains iron and carbon, along with small amounts of other elements like manganese, silicon, and sulfur.

The raw materials usually come in the form of large steel billets. These billets are like big, thick bars of steel. They’re made in a steel mill through a process called continuous casting. In continuous casting, molten steel is poured into a mold, and as it cools and solidifies, it forms a long, continuous billet.

Heating the Billets

Once we have our billets, the next step is to heat them up. We use a special furnace to do this. The furnace gets really hot, usually around 1200 to 1300 degrees Celsius. Heating the billets makes them soft and malleable, which is important for the next stage of the process.

Rolling the Steel

After the billets are heated, it’s time to roll them into the shape of angle steel. We use a rolling mill for this. The rolling mill has a series of large rollers that squeeze and shape the heated steel.

The first set of rollers, called roughing rollers, start to reduce the thickness of the billet and give it a more rectangular shape. Then, the steel goes through a series of finishing rollers. These rollers are shaped in a way that forms the characteristic L-shape of angle steel.

The rolling process is really important because it determines the final dimensions and quality of the angle steel. We have to make sure the rollers are set up correctly to get the right size and shape.

Cooling the Angle Steel

Once the angle steel has been rolled into the right shape, it needs to be cooled down. We usually do this by passing the steel through a water spray or an air cooling system. Cooling the steel quickly helps to harden it and gives it the strength and durability it needs.

Cutting and Finishing

After the angle steel has cooled, it’s time to cut it into the right lengths. We use a saw to cut the steel to the desired size. Then, we do some finishing work. This might include deburring, which is removing any rough edges or burrs from the steel. We might also apply a coating to the angle steel to protect it from rust and corrosion.

Quality Control

Throughout the entire process, we have a strict quality control system in place. We check the angle steel at every stage to make sure it meets our standards. We look at things like the dimensions, the surface finish, and the mechanical properties of the steel.

We use a variety of testing methods, such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, and tensile testing. These tests help us to detect any defects or flaws in the angle steel and make sure it’s safe and reliable for our customers.
