Both chlorella and spirulina need an adequate amount of light to grow. In a natural setting, sunlight is the best source. But in a commercial &#8211; growing environment like ours, we sometimes supplement with artificial light.<\/p>\n<p>For chlorella, it can tolerate a wide range of light intensities. However, for optimal growth, we aim for a light intensity of about 3000 &#8211; 5000 lux. Spirulina needs a bit more light. We usually provide a light intensity of around 5000 &#8211; 8000 lux. The light duration also matters. We typically provide 12 &#8211; 16 hours of light per day to mimic natural daylight conditions.<\/p>\n<h3>The Growth Process<\/h3>\n<h4>Inoculation<\/h4>\n<p>The first step in growing chlorella and spirulina is inoculation. We start with a small amount of pure chlorella or spirulina culture. This culture is carefully selected to ensure its high quality and viability.<\/p>\n<p>We introduce the culture into a small container filled with the appropriate growth medium (water with the right nutrients). This container is like a nursery for the algae. We keep a close eye on it, making sure the conditions are perfect for the initial growth. Too much or too little of a nutrient can affect the growth of the algae. For example, if there&#8217;s not enough nitrogen, the algae will grow slowly and may turn pale.<\/p>\n<h4>Monitoring and Maintenance<\/h4>\n<p>As the chlorella and spirulina grow, we constantly monitor their growth. We check the water quality parameters such as pH, temperature, and nutrient levels every day. We also observe the color and density of the algae.<\/p>\n<p>If the pH drifts out of the optimal range, we add acids or bases to adjust it. For example, if the pH of the spirulina water is too low, we add sodium carbonate to increase it.<\/p>\n<p>We also need to prevent the growth of contaminants. Algae can be susceptible to other competing algae, bacteria, and fungi. To prevent this, we use filtration systems to remove debris and any unwanted organisms from the water. We also sometimes add mild disinfectants in small amounts to keep the water clean.<\/p>\n<h3>Harvesting<\/h3>\n<p>Once the chlorella and spirulina reach the right density, it&#8217;s time to harvest them.
